Linda Hanson (Sandra Bullock) tiene una casa preciosa, un marido que la quiere y dos hijas adorables. La verdadera historia de “El Fugitivo”, comenzó un 4 de julio de 1954, cuando, en el estado de Ohio, el Dr. Sam Sheppard fue injustamente acusado del crimen de su esposa, Marilyn Reese Sheppard, de 31 años, quien además estaba embarazada de cuatro meses. El caso tuvo en vilo a toda la sociedad norteamericana, por lo que no fue extraño que, 9 años más tarde, se estrenara una serie de televisión que hiciera referencia al tema. Fue el escritor Quinn Martin, autor de “Los Intocables”, quien creo la historia inspirado en el caso, para que luego el productor Roy Huggins comenzara todos los preparativos para hacer una de las series más exitosas de la televisión. El rol del Dr. Sam Sheppard, fue interpretado por David Janssen, y su nombre fue reemplazado por el de Dr. Richard Kimble. Así, la cadena de televisión norteamericana ABC emitió el primer capítulo de la serie “El Fugitivo”, donde se mostraba como Kimble lograba huir de la policía durante su trayecto a la cárcel. A partir de allí, el teniente Gerard (Barry Morse) comenzaba una implacable búsqueda, que se prolongaría por cuatro años. "La Ley lo determinó así" era la única respuesta de este policía cuando se le preguntaba si creía que el fugitivo era culpable. Durante su huída, Kimble tenía un solo objetivo: encontrar al verdadero asesino de su esposa, un hombre manco (Bill Raisch) al que vió frente a su casa minutos después de que éste asesinara a su esposa. La música fue compuesta por conocido jazzista Pete Rugolo, y la duración de la serie fue de tres años, hasta 1966, lapso en el cual se emitieron 120 capítulos. Durante ese tiempo, el Dr. Kimble recibió ocho balazos, cuatro heridas de arma blanca, 30 piñas, y sufrió amnesia, una ceguera temporal y neumonía. Aún así, no pudo con su fama de playboy y fueron varias las mujeres que intentaron abordarlo. Durante su último capítulo la serie alcanzó el record de 72 puntos de rating, lo que equivale a decir que Estados Unidos quedó paralizado para saber si el Dr. Kimble lograría demostrar su inocencia, lo que finalmente ocurrió cuando “el manco” confesó ser el culpable. Previa a esta emisión, los actores se encargaron de despistar las especulaciones del público, haciendo diferentes comentarios a la prensa sobre el posible final de la serie. Ese mismo año, el verdadero Dr. Sheppard, fue sobreseído del asesinato y pudo salir de la cárcel, aunque con notables daños psicológicos. Con su vida destruida, utilizó la mayor parte de su tiempo para consumir alcohol y drogas. Trató incluso de aprovechar su dudosa fama dedicándose a la lucha libre, con el nombre de “Sheppard el Asesino”. Sin embargo, estaba claro que el otrora prestigioso doctor jamás pensó en llevar ese tipo de vida, y era evidente que había perdido su personalidad. Su segunda mujer lo dejó por infidelidades, y seis meses después Sheppard murió prematuramente a los 46 años. Las paradojas de la vida, hicieron que el actor que lo personificó, David Janssen, sufriera un camino similar al del Dr. Seheppard. Luego de su éxito profesional, también se lanzó a la bebida y a la promiscuidad, y murió en forma temprana a los 48 años de edad, por causas poco claras. Se cree que el verdadero asesino fue Richard Eberling, un errante vagabundo que había acudido en varias oportunidades a la casa de fin de semana de los Sheppard, y que falleció en prisión en 1998, cumpliendo una condena por otro crimen. Fue tan amplio el mito de “El fugitivo”, que volvió a la pantalla en dos oprtunidades. En 1993, fue llevado al cine, con las actuaciones de Harrison Ford y Tommy Lee Jones, y en 2000 una remake para la TV.
